Beer dance school
In 1897, the married couple Julius and Auguste Bier founded the Bier dance school in a restaurant in Marktstraße, which took over the management of the Kurhaus balls in 1908. Modern dances of the time were the Rhinelander, polka, mazurka and Viennese waltz. Egon Bier took over the management in 1928 and, together with his wife Ria, introduced a wealth of standard dances such as foxtrot, slow waltz and tango. In 1929, he added tap dancing, which he had studied with Fred Astaire (1899-1987) and was the first to teach in Germany.
In 1934, Egon Bier founded the Blau-Orange dance club, which produced famous dancers such as the dance couple Inge and Otto Teipel (1911-2009), who became German champions eight times. In 1937, the first German dance teacher film was made in Wiesbaden. Egon Bier then became the first consultant for dance film productions in America. In 1950, the management was passed on to the grandson of the founding couple, Udo Bier, and his wife Helga, who taught the students fashionable dances such as mambo, calypso, samba and cha-cha-cha.
The Bier couple cultivated international contacts and continued their education on numerous trips abroad, e.g. to North and South America. In 1956, the Bier dance school became an honorary member of the "Dance Masters of America" association. Udo Bier was successful as a dance teacher in Europe, Canada and the USA. Conversely, dance teachers from all over the world came to Wiesbaden to learn here.
The successes on the dance floor were followed by structural and commercial expansions, including the establishment of a branch in Idstein. In 1997, the Bierstadt dance school was awarded the Golden City Plaque. While the Caro Bier dance school in Idstein continued to operate successfully, the Bier dance school in Wiesbaden closed its doors on 31.08.2013.
