Apartment fire in retirement home, fire department rescues residents
At around 10 a.m. this morning, the Wiesbaden fire department received a report of a fire in a retirement home in Buschungstraße in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim. Due to the expected number of people affected, the control center alerted an increased number of fire and rescue service personnel.
A fire was discovered on site in an apartment on the first floor. Emergency crews forced their way in by breaking down the apartment door. A team wearing breathing protection entered the completely smoke-filled apartment and was able to locate and rescue a person from the apartment after just a few seconds. The occupant was immediately treated by the emergency services and then transported to a hospital in Wiesbaden with severe smoke inhalation for further treatment.
Once the rescue operation had been completed, the fire in the apartment was extinguished within a very short time. As the smoke from the fire had not only spread in the affected apartment but also in several corridors, these also had to be checked by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. Residents of the adjoining apartments were safest there and did not have to leave during the operation.
Firefighters from all three fire stations of the professional fire department and the Erbenheim volunteer fire department were at the scene. The volunteer fire departments from Bierstadt and Nordenstadt, which were also alerted, were no longer needed and were able to leave the scene. The emergency services deployed three ambulances, an emergency doctor and the organizational leader.
The apartment on fire is no longer habitable and the amount of damage is unknown. Investigations into the cause of the fire were initiated by the police, who were also present.
