Integrated and cooperative comprehensive schools

In 1969, Wiesbaden's oldest integrated comprehensive school (IGS) was founded in Mainz-Kostheim, named after the resistance fighter against National Socialism Wilhelm Leuschner. In addition to imparting knowledge, the concept includes a wide range of physical activities and help with career guidance and preparation. In 1970, the "Theodor-Fliedner-Schule" (a grammar school since 2009) followed as an additive comprehensive school, followed by the "Geschwister-Scholl-Schule" in 1972 and the "Riehlschule" in 1974. With the exception of the "Theodor-Fliedner-Schule", the schools mentioned have developed into an IGS ("Geschwister-Scholl-Schule" in 1990, the "Wilhelm-Heinrich-von-Riehlschule" in 2006). The "Helene-Lange-Schule" changed from a grammar school to an IGS with a reform pedagogical approach in 1986, the "Schule an der Kastellstraße", later "Käthe-Kollwitz-Schule", changed from a Hauptschule to an IGS in 1988 and the "Hermann-Ehlers-Schule" changed from a Hauptschule and Realschule to an IGS in 1992. While the "Wilhelm-Leuschner-Schule" was joined by an upper secondary school in 1972, the "Carl-von-Ossietzky-Schule" in Klarenthal was created for the "Geschwister-Scholl-Schule" - "Wilhelm-Heinrich-von-Riehlschule" and temporarily "Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium" school group and the "Martin-Niemöller-Schule" on Moltkering for the "Helene-Lange-Schule" and the "Theodor-Fliedner-Schule" as upper secondary schools.

The "Helene-Lange-Schule" focuses on cultural practice, independent learning and work-related internships. At IGS Kastellstraße, the focus is on independent learning and independent action, which is taught with the help of psychosocial and interactive teaching concepts. The "Geschwister-Scholl-Schule" follows a similar approach, supplementing its lessons with a focus on health promotion and artistic activities. The "Hermann-Ehlers-Schule" focuses on conflict resolution through so-called mediators, pupils who are accompanied and trained by teachers and a dedicated social education worker. The "Wilhelm-Heinrich-von-Riehl-Schule" offers a wide range of electives from sports, dance and theater to its own newspaper. Since 2009, the Alexej-von-Jawlensky-Schule has focused on creative learning in all subjects. Wiesbaden's IGS schools have many things in common, but at the same time differ in their subject focus and knowledge transfer concepts. Cooperation with artistic, sporting and state institutions as well as close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and the expansion of all facilities into all-day schools, some of which have already been completed, have resulted in innovative school concepts whose popularity with parents and pupils is reflected in consistently high enrolment figures.
