Mechtildshausen domain
Mechtildshausen became part of the Duchy of Nassau in 1806. A model farm was introduced here in 1860. The Mechtildshausen estate experienced a great boom from 1893 onwards and became a model farm for the region.
After 1945, it became the property of the state of Hesse when it was founded. In 1987, the state capital of Wiesbaden leased the Mechthildshausen domain; since then, it has been managed by the Wiesbaden Youth Workshop, is an organic farm and also serves as a training center for young people. A guest house and restaurant were built, and rooms for larger celebrations have been available since 2005.
When the Mechthildshausen estate was taken over by the city of Wiesbaden in 1987, the conversion of production methods to organic-biological principles began. At the Mechtildshausen site, 185 hectares of arable land are cultivated. In addition, Jugendwirtschaft operates the Klarenthal farm with approx. 30 ha, the Gassenbacher farm in Idstein with approx. 140 ha and a farm in Watzelhain in the Taunus with approx. 60 ha. The remainder comprises pastures in the Taunus and grassland along the Rhine.
On 01.05.1992, after a five-year conversion phase, Domäne Mechthildshausen received recognition as an "organic farm". This was followed on 01.07.1992 by recognition by the European Community (EU since 1993).
