Night-time fire in apartment building
During the night of February 17-18, the Wiesbaden fire department was called to a fire in an apartment building on Dotzheimer Straße. When the first emergency services arrived, a fire was discovered in a first floor apartment. Several people were making themselves heard at the windows of the apartments above.
Due to this situation, the alert level was immediately raised to "fire with human life in danger". In addition to the units of the professional fire department and the alerted forces of the Wiesbaden city center volunteer fire department, another ambulance and an emergency doctor were dispatched.
To rescue people and fight the fire, two teams wearing breathing apparatus entered the apartment, as it could not be ruled out that there were still people inside. Fortunately, this suspicion was not confirmed. At the same time, another team wearing breathing protection checked the stairwell and ensured that it remained smoke-free by means of targeted ventilation measures. This prevented any danger to the residents remaining in the building, who were able to stay in their apartments.
The fire had broken out in the kitchen of the first floor apartment. It was quickly extinguished. The building and an adjoining apartment in the neighboring building were then checked for possible pollutants. Here, too, the all-clear was given and all residents were able to remain in their apartments.
Two residents who had inhaled smoke from the stairwell were examined by the emergency services. No further hospital treatment was necessary. Thanks to the rapid alerting of the Wiesbaden fire department by residents who had been woken by a smoke alarm, it was possible to prevent anything worse from happening.
