The European bison is the largest land mammal in Europe and a close relative of the American bison. Once almost extinct, it was saved through targeted breeding and conservation programs. These impressive animals live in small herds and feed mainly on grasses, leaves and bark. Despite their massive bodies, bison are surprisingly agile and can even fell trees to reach food.
Etymologically, "der Wiesent" is correct, as the word is derived from the Old High German wisunt, which has a masculine ending, and it developed in parallel with "der Bison" in terms of language history.
Three bison live in the pheasantry.
Their names are Petra, Elke and Jutta.
