Organization of the city archive

Every year, the Wiesbaden City Archive answers around 3,000 inquiries from users from all over the world, advises the administrative offices of the state capital of Wiesbaden on the management of their analog and digital documents and stores around five kilometers of archive material.

The Wiesbaden City Archive is a department of the Department of Culture and is subordinate to Department III - Department of Finance, Schools and Culture. It currently performs its tasks with eleven employees, one trainee and support and project staff.

Organizationally, the "City Archive" department is divided into the department management with the office and three subject areas. The "Files, Official Records, Digital Documents" department is responsible for the evaluation, acquisition, preservation and use of the City Archive's paper-based and electronic documents. This department is also responsible for the service library.

The "Photos, Plans, Special Collections" department is responsible for the acquisition, cataloging and presentation of the special collections (photos, films, aerial photographs, plans, maps, engravings, postcards) in the area of all specialist archival tasks. This includes, in particular, the preservation of holdings, digitization processes and copyright issues.

The "Memorials, City History" department manages the memorials and places of remembrance of the state capital of Wiesbaden and organizes the historical educational work of the city archive, including for schools. It is also responsible for the annual series of events on January 27, the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism. In addition, the department deals with numerous inquiries and commissions relating to city history from other departments, offices, divisions and the city's political bodies, and is also responsible for statements on municipal honors and commemorative formats.
