Incipient fire in a department store extinguished by employees
This evening, the Wiesbaden fire department was called to a fire in a department store in Kirchgasse. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the employees, who successfully fought the incipient fire with small extinguishers, greater damage was prevented.
Smoke detectors in the building had discovered the fire at around 5.40 p.m. and triggered an alarm in the Wiesbaden fire department control center via the automatic fire alarm system. Emergency services from fire station 1 were alerted and were able to determine on site that parts of the sales area were filled with smoke. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the fire had started in the area of a clothes rack. Employees had already been able to contain the fire with several fire extinguishers to such an extent that the emergency services were able to take the fire directly outside for final extinguishing. The smoke from the fire was also removed from the sales area using ventilation equipment. No one was injured and the police have begun investigating the cause of the fire. In this context, the fire department recommends only attempting to extinguish the fire yourself if this is possible without endangering yourself. The dangers of fire smoke and heat should not be underestimated. Much more important than attempting to extinguish the fire is to call the European emergency number 112 early and correctly. (nw)
