Room fire at night in an apartment building "Im Rad"
At 2.40 a.m. tonight, the Wiesbaden fire department control center received a report of a fire in a nine-storey apartment building in the street "Im Rad". Callers reported flames coming from an apartment on the seventh floor of the building. The control center then alerted emergency services from Fire Station 1 and the Stadtmitte volunteer fire department.
On arrival at the scene, the incident commander was able to confirm the situation: flames were shooting out of a window of the affected apartment, the balcony in front of it was on fire, the fire had already spread to the balcony above and was threatening to run into the apartment. Burning debris was also falling onto the balconies below. Residents of the affected building had already begun to evacuate to safety via the stairwell.
Due to the expected number of people affected and the dynamic situation, the incident commander raised the alert, which resulted in additional emergency services being alerted. With the help of a turntable ladder, firefighting was immediately initiated from the outside to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading. In addition, several teams wearing breathing apparatus entered the affected floors via the stairwell. They were able to determine that the occupants of the apartment on fire were fortunately able to bring themselves to safety. In addition to fighting the fire, these teams also checked the neighboring apartments, some of which had to be opened by force, and ensured that smoke was extracted. At the same time, other emergency services cleared the building together with colleagues from the state police, which went without complications thanks to the level-headed actions of the residents.
A total of 52 residents of the building were seen by the emergency services and cared for in an ESWE Verkehr bus by a rapid response team. Three people suffered minor injuries from the smoke, but did not need to be taken to hospital. The fire rendered one apartment on the seventh floor uninhabitable, and alternative accommodation was organized for the residents by the emergency pastoral care service. All other apartments could be used again after the measures had been completed.
Around 45 members of the Wiesbaden fire department, ten members of the rescue service, the rescue service operations management team, the DRK SEG care team and the emergency pastoral care team were deployed. For parallel operations in the city area, stations 1 and 2 of the professional fire department were manned by the Sonnenberg and Delkenheim volunteer fire departments. (jh)
