The legend of the giant Ekko

Historical map of an area with river, settlements and surrounding landscapes, including paths and prominent points.
Historical map of the Wiesbaden district

... The giant Ekko once lived in the Wiesbaden region. He felt disturbed by a dragon from the Taunus forests and set out to slay the beast. But he couldn't find it anywhere. This angered the giant Ekko so much that he plunged his lance into the ground in a rage. He thought he heard the mocking laughter of the beast from the depths. To be on the safe side, he pulled his lance out of the ground. Boiling water immediately shot out of the ground and burned his bare feet. This made him even angrier. And because he was convinced that the dragon was sitting in the ground and was to blame, he plunged his lance into the ground again and again, deeper and deeper. Then, unexpectedly, a powerful jet of hot water hit him in the face, causing him to lose his balance. Ekko just managed to brace himself. His left hand and forearm dug deep into the sodden ground. Cursing, the giant gave up his search and staggered away with a scalded face and swollen feet. However, the imprint of his arm and fingers can still be seen today ...

According to legend, this is how Wiesbaden's valleys, hills and thermal springs came into being. The imprint of the middle hand is the Wiesbaden cauldron. The thumb, finger and forearm form the stream valleys of Rambach, Schwarzbach, Dambach, Kesselbach, Wellritzbach and Salzbach. And where the giant plunged his lance into the ground, hot water has been bubbling out of the earth ever since.
