Streams to the light
Wiesbaden is a city of water - five stream systems and their valleys determine the structure of Wiesbaden's terrain. In the city center, most of the streams today run underground. The "Brooks to the Light!" project will bring them back to the surface at various locations.
Water characterizes the state capital of Wiesbaden in many ways: On the one hand, the hot thermal springs have led to Wiesbaden's fame and rise as a spa town. On the other hand, the Rambach, Schwarzbach, Dambach, Kesselbach and Wellritzbach streams and their numerous tributaries characterize Wiesbaden's topography. At the beginning of the 19th century, when a lot of living space had to be created due to the rapidly increasing population, the piping of the streams was considered a major step forward due to their poor hygienic condition. Today, however, the stream water is clean and the cooling function of water in hot and dry summers is appreciated in the overheated inner city areas.
The Kesselbach and Wellritzbach streams will reappear on the surface in three places along their underground course as part of the "Streams to Light" project. The visible and tangible sections of stream will enhance the cityscape and increase awareness of the vital element of water. At the same time, the stream water can also counteract heat islands and thus improve the microclimate. This is already the case in the neighborhood square at Platz der Deutschen Einheit. Sedanplatz, Bülowplatz and Stadtplatz will follow by the end of 2025.
