Watercourses - lifelines of our city

Wiesbaden's landscape is largely shaped by the Rhine and its widely ramified stream systems, which fulfill very different functions.

Watercourses are a habitat for animals and plants, a place for people to enjoy and should drain flood waters without causing damage. However, many bodies of water have been heavily modified by humans and their functions have been impaired. In order to positively counteract this development, the state capital of Wiesbaden is undertaking a wide range of measures to restore natural watercourses to a good ecological condition. This is based on the binding objectives of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Renaturation measures are flanked by tree care programs, the development of flowering meadows and other water maintenance and care activities.

In the inner city area, the "Streams to Light" program is bringing sections of watercourses back to the surface, making the lifelines of our city visible again.
