Water abstraction from watercourses

In addition to the Rhine and the Main as the largest watercourses in Wiesbaden, many streams also run through the state capital. In order to protect the animals living in them, the Water Resources Act (WHG) and the Hessian Water Act (HWG) regulate the use of these bodies of water.

What is permitted on watercourses without a permit?

  • Watering and scooping with hand containers (e.g. watering can, bucket)
  • Discharging spring water, groundwater and small amounts of rainwater
  • Bathing and diving
  • Ice sports

The owner may use the water for his own use without permission. Attention must be paid to adverse effects on the water balance.

The owners and leaseholders of land adjacent to bodies of water may use the water for their own legally permitted needs. Water extraction using a pump is also not permitted. Attention must also be paid to the detrimental effects on the water balance. Damming the water is also not permitted for owners.

What applies specifically to the Rhine and Main?

Water up to 10 l/s and 1,000 m3 per year may be extracted from the Rhine and Main rivers by mobile installations, but this must first be reported to the water authority.

What is prohibited on watercourses?

  • Discharge of large quantities of precipitation water, a permit is required here
  • Introduction and discharge of substances
  • Using plant protection products that are not only approved for allotment garden use. The instructions for use must be observed
  • Use plant protection products and fertilizers, including preventive plant protection products (e.g. weedkillers) up to a distance of 5 m from the watercourse

What else needs to be considered?

In the event of low water discharge, the municipalities can issue a general decree restricting or prohibiting the use of water bodies. Information about this is provided in a press release on this website of the City of Wiesbaden.
