Field of experience for the development of the senses and thinking, Freudenberg Castle

In 1993, the city of Wiesbaden leased the completely dilapidated Freudenberg Castle to the actor and circus performer Matthias Schenk and his wife Beatrice Dastis Schenk in order to put it to a new use.

The two artists, who were fascinated by the pedagogue and artist Hugo Kükelhaus, the "inventor" of the field of experience for the development of the senses and thinking, were looking for a permanent location for such an adventure park at the time. Kükelhaus had developed experimental and play stations that would enable people to experience natural laws such as vibration or gravity on their own bodies.

The facility on the Freudenberg aims to promote the abilities of human perception, experience and understanding in a variety of ways in the castle and the extensive park landscape. It sees itself as a pedagogical educational facility as well as an economically viable event center.

The Erfahrungsfeld is run by an association founded in 1994, the Society for Nature and Art, which undertook the renovation of the building with the help of volunteers, young prisoners and the long-term unemployed. The German Foundation for Monument Protection provided DM 1 million. In 2005, the city transferred the castle to the operators in return for a symbolic ground rent for 66 years so that the proceeds could be used for the further renovation and preservation of the castle. In 2008, the Freudenberg Castle Monument Foundation was established within the German Foundation for Monument Protection to ensure the preservation of the building.
