Deinhard, Doris, née Leonhardt
translator
born: 14.02.1896 in Barcelona
died: 29.02.1980 in Wiesbaden
Deinhard, the daughter of German parents living in Barcelona, attended schools in Barcelona, Dresden and Geneva, returned to Spain in 1913, turned mainly to Spanish literature and theater and gave private Spanish lessons. The beginning of the Spanish Civil War marked the start of an odyssey that finally led her to Wiesbaden in 1948.
Her work as a translator began with Antonio Buero Vallejo's (1916-2000) play "Story of a Staircase", which was first performed in Dortmund in 1952. In 1953, she translated the "Elegy in Prose" (Platero y yo. Elegia andaluza. 1907-1916) by Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881-1958), who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956. Her translations reflect the personal style of each author in all its subtleties.
She has translated around 20 extensive novels from Spanish. But her work also included translations from French, English and Italian.
