The second oldest wine-growing community in the Rheingau is the Wiesbaden wine suburb of Kostheim, which has the largest vineyard area in Wiesbaden. Riesling and Pinot Noir are the main grape varieties grown on a total of 91 hectares. However, the Kostheim winegrowers' repertoire also includes Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. Kostheim is not only known for its excellent wine, but also for its way of life. The district has a colorful range of wineries with farm festivals, ostrich taverns and estate taverns and the beautifully situated wine tasting stand on the banks of the Main. Since 2013, winegrowers from Hochheim, Kostheim and Wicker have also been inviting visitors to the Wine Experience Trail Festival on the Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail on the first weekend after Whitsun.

Site name, soil structure and wine characters

Kostheimer Steig

The site name "Steig" is derived from the Middle High German word "Stigel", which means climb, ladder or staircase for climbing over an enclosure or climb for a steep path. The soils were formed from sandy-gravelly Main deposits with loess and loess loam. The wines are harmonious with a piquant acidity and a fine interplay of aromas.

Kostheimer Weiß Erd

The site is named after the light soil color. The soils are loess loam and loess with a proportion of more or less gravelly tertiary marl. The wines are full-bodied with a racy and fruity acidity. They are very closed when young.

Kostheimer St. Kiliansberg

Derived from the patron saint - Saint St. Kilian - of the Franconian timber raftsmen, who assembled the small rafts at the mouth of the Main into large units for transporting timber on the Rhine and settled here. The soils are clayey, skeleton-poor, calcareous marl soils. The wines are full-bodied with plenty of race and mineral acidity.
