The university is privately sponsored by Hochschule Fresenius gemeinnützige GmbH and continues the educational tradition of the Fresenius family. It is named after the wife of Carl Remigius Fresenius, the founder of the Chemical Laboratory, on which Hochschule Fresenius is based. It is the first and only university in Germany to bear the name of a woman.
