Lord Mayor Mende: "Cross the Rhine comfortably with the 'Kaiserspindel'"

On Monday, March 24, Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende announced the schedule for the construction of the spindle on the Kaiser Bridge, which leads from Kastel and Amöneburg to Mainz. Thanks to the "Kaiserspindel", in future it will be possible to cross the Rhine comfortably without having to carry your bike up the stairs.

The design planning is currently being finalized. The schedule envisages obtaining the official approvals by the end of May. The invitation to tender for the construction project is scheduled to begin in the 3rd quarter, with the contract being awarded to a construction company in the 4th quarter. Construction is scheduled to begin in the 1st quarter of 2026. Construction is expected to take around 15 months. The municipal civil engineering and surveying office is responsible for the project.

Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende: "Wiesbaden is continuing to invest in its cycling infrastructure. With the 'Kaiserspindel', we are creating another attractive offer for all those who like to travel by bike. Quickly up or down the Kaiserbrücke without the hassle of pushing: In future, anyone with bicycles, baby carriages or wheelchairs will be able to access the Kaiserbrücke bridge without steps - and thus travel to Mainz or Wiesbaden comfortably and barrier-free. This is a significant improvement. On behalf of the state capital of Wiesbaden - but also personally - I would like to thank the dedicated authorities and everyone else involved for their cooperation across the Rhine."

Head of Transport Andreas Kowol: "Cycling is being used more and more frequently for medium-length journeys and for commuting to work. With the construction of the Kaiserspindel, we are meeting this demand. Every commuter who cycles to work in the morning relieves pressure on our road network and helps those who are dependent on cars."

The plans have been coordinated with the state capital Mainz. A ramp is planned on the Rhine side there, so that a stepless connection will also be created there. The cost of the project is calculated at 4.8 million euros; it is expected that the federal government will cover 80 percent via a funding program.
