Heavy rain - prevention is a joint task

Measures against damage caused by heavy rain are not only the responsibility of the city. Property owners are also obliged to protect their properties. It is important that flood prevention on your own property does not affect neighboring properties or the public road space.

Thick raindrops fall on a paved path on which puddles form, with a green lawn in the background.
Flooding can also occur in the area due to heavy rainfall.

Flash floods can occur anywhere. Even a slight slope can cause masses of water to flow towards a building during a downpour. Water can also collect in hollows or underpasses. Residents can use a checklist at the bottom of the page to make an initial assessment of whether or not their building is at risk of flooding. Comprehensive heavy rain hazard maps and risk information maps derived from them have been created for Wiesbaden. Access can be found under the following link:

After heavy rainfall, water can enter a building on a slope or in a depression in various ways: Masses of water above ground penetrate through defective roofs, leaking windows and door cracks and through cellar and light wells. Seepage water can also push into the building through the outer walls. And many building floods are caused by backwater from the sewer system, where wastewater from the sewer system runs into cellars or basements.

Precautionary property protection: possible measures

  • Installation of pressure-resistant and watertight basement windows and doors
  • Roofing over cellar entrances and light wells
  • Elevation of house entrances or shafts
  • Backflow protection against water from the sewer system
  • Unsealing and water-permeable floor coverings on the property
  • Sufficient dimensioning and regular cleaning of gutters and downpipes
  • Rainwater harvesting in barrels or cisterns
  • Infiltration troughs on the property for short-term rainwater storage
  • Green roofs
  • Different waterproofing options for the house walls
