The Rheingau Wine Week in Wiesbaden was first held in 1976 with the aim of supporting Rheingau winegrowers in the presentation and marketing of their products and promoting trade in the city. The Rheingau Wine Week traditionally takes place for ten days in August.

In 1976, the Rheingau Wine Week was only held in the immediate area around the town hall and in the Neugasse/Schulgasse area, but just one year later Mauritiusplatz and Kirchgasse up to Friedrichstraße were included. In 1980, the entire pedestrian zone in Langgasse developed into an ostrich tavern. Luisenplatz and Schützenhofstraße were added in 1987 and the Dern'sche site in 1997. From 2003, at the express wish of the winegrowers, all the stands were moved to the market square and the Dern'sche site.

Since 2000, more than 500,000 people have visited the wine festival every year.
