Fire in warehouse keeps fire department busy for hours
This afternoon, the fire department was alerted via the emergency number 112 at around 16:00. Callers reported heavy smoke coming from doors, windows and the roof of a warehouse building in Petersweg.
The control center immediately dispatched firefighters from fire stations 1 and 2, the Mainz-Kastel volunteer fire department, two ambulances and an emergency doctor to the scene. On site, it turned out that a fire had broken out in an approx. 20x6 meter, partially two-storey warehouse building. One person suffered minor burns and was immediately handed over to the emergency services for medical treatment. After outpatient treatment in a clinic, the person was able to leave the hospital in the evening hours. The building structure was so badly damaged by the fire that parts of the building collapsed during the extinguishing work. A targeted interior attack was therefore no longer possible. In order to fight the fire and protect the surrounding buildings, the firefighters simultaneously deployed up to 6 nozzles from teams wearing breathing apparatus. Additional personnel support arrived from the Kostheim volunteer fire department. Extinguishing foam was used to extinguish the pockets of fire that were difficult to access after the collapse. Supplies of the necessary foam concentrate were provided by the fire engines of the Breckenheim and Sonnenberg volunteer fire departments. As the pockets of embers were constantly reignited even after the foam operation and it was impossible to enter the building due to the risk of collapse, the building was demolished in cooperation with a specialist company in order to be able to carry out the extinguishing measures in a targeted manner. These measures and the post-extinguishing work are expected to continue until the early hours of the morning. The emergency services on site are being provided with food and drink by the logistics group and the Igstadt volunteer fire department. The police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire; it is not possible to make a statement about the amount of property damage at present. In order to ensure basic protection in the southern part of the city, the orphaned Fire Station 2 was manned by members of the Biebrich and Delkenheim volunteer fire departments.
