Identity card

Current information
From May 1, 2025, photographs for passports and ID cards will only be taken digitally. The photo can be taken by certified photographers. Paper-based passport photos can no longer be accepted due to the change in the law.

Germans who have reached the age of 16 are required to have an ID card. This does not apply if you have a valid German passport.

To apply for an ID card, you must be registered as having your main residence in Wiesbaden. If you are not registered as having your main residence in Wiesbaden, you must provide evidence of important reasons why an application must be made in Wiesbaden.

The application for an identity card for persons under the age of 16 must be made by the person with custody who has the right of residence. If the custodial parents are not only temporarily separated, only the parent with whom the child normally lives can apply for the ID card. The child must also be present when the application is made.

The German ID card also serves as an online ID card (opens in a new tab).

You can collect your new ID card around the clock via the WI-Box (opens in a new tab). Please contact us when you apply.

We are happy to be there for you in person, but only work by appointment. Book an appointment quickly and easily online in the appointment calendar at the Citizens' Office or the local administrations.
