Identity card after loss or theft
Current information
From May 1, 2025, photographs for passports and ID cards will only be taken digitally. The photo can be taken by certified photographers. Paper-based passport photos can no longer be accepted due to the change in the law.
If your ID card has been lost or stolen, you must report this. You must also apply for a new ID card if you are over 16 years old and do not have a valid passport document.
You must report the loss or theft to the Citizens' Office or a local authority. They are obliged to inform a police authority immediately. You can block your online ID function yourself in advance by telephone. The easiest way to block it is to call the toll-free 116 116 blocking hotline. During the phone call, you will be asked for your surname, first name, date of birth and blocking password. You will find this information in the PIN letter.
You can find more information about applying for an ID card here.
We are happy to be there for you in person, but only work by appointment. Book an appointment quickly and easily online in the appointment calendar at the Citizens' Office or the local administrations.
