Young city dwellers' sense of safety in public spaces
How do young people in Wiesbaden feel about their safety? Do they generally feel safe in the city or do concerns about their own physical safety prevail? The Office for Statistics and Urban Research investigated these and other questions on behalf of the Prevention Council.
The project was implemented in cooperation with the West Hesse Police Headquarters. The aim was to identify specific problem areas and potential areas of fear in the city and to provide basic information for the design of future municipal prevention projects.
Young city dwellers generally feel safe
On a positive note, the majority of young city dwellers generally feel safe in the city (66%) and trust in state institutions, above all the police (77%) and justice system (67%). 63% of respondents described the coexistence of the different sections of the city's population as good or rather good.
For almost three quarters of all respondents (73%), however, there are also places in Wiesbaden where they feel unsafe or at least uncomfortable. Frequently mentioned areas are the Platz der Deutschen Einheit, the area around the main railway station and parts of the city center in general. This insecurity results from problems such as destruction and vandalism (44 percent), graffiti (36 percent), violence (34 percent), noise (32 percent) and drug dealing or consumption (30 percent). Although these are named as problematic, they are not the most relevant issues for the respondents. Instead, homeless and begging people are perceived as the biggest problem and insecurity factor by 61% of respondents, followed by "hanging around" young people and adults (58%) and "drunk people" (51%). Further results of the survey show that this categorization is definitely the result of specific negative experiences in public spaces, but is often also applied across the board to entire sections of urban society.
The study by the Office for Urban Research and Statistics makes it clear that an increased risk to personal safety is seen less as a result of the fear of becoming a victim of a serious crime, but rather as the result of increasingly dysfunctional social interaction in public spaces. Accordingly, harassment and threats (61%), theft (45%) and sexual harassment (53%) are the biggest concerns that have a negative impact on respondents' perception of safety. The respondents also seem to be aware of the complexity of these challenges and the majority of them not only call for a "strong state", but also consider a whole range of measures to be useful. In addition to a consistent crackdown by the law enforcement and security authorities and a strong presence in public spaces, better street lighting and more social measures in terms of violence prevention, street workers and (school) social work are therefore also advocated.
