Raccoon

The North American raccoon is a skilled climber and a real survivor. With its black "face masks" and nimble paws, it curiously explores its surroundings. Originally from North America, it has settled in Europe and often lives in forests or even cities. Raccoons are omnivores and use their dexterous front paws to feel and apparently "wash" food.

As an invasive species, the North American raccoon has spread rapidly in Germany. As it has no natural enemies, it can displace native animal species and raid the nesting sites of birds or small mammals. Its adaptability makes it a survival artist, but poses challenges for native nature. Scientists and conservationists are therefore discussing measures to control its spread and preserve the ecological balance.
