Genealogical research and copies of documents

The Wiesbaden City Archive holds a large number of civil status documents from both the Wiesbaden registry office and the registry offices of the formerly independent city districts dating back to 1874. When making inquiries, please always state the full name and the date of birth or death or the date of marriage of the person you are looking for. When making a request, please note that civil status documents will only be handed over to the Wiesbaden City Archives with the following deadlines:

  • Birth register: 110 years after the birth
  • Death register: 30 years after the death
  • Marriage register and civil partnership register: 80 years after the marriage or registration of the civil partnership

If the above-mentioned periods have not yet expired, please contact the relevant registry office to request extracts.

Fees are charged for the research of civil status documents and the creation of (certified) copies in accordance with the annex to the regulations for the use of the Wiesbaden City Archive.

In the case of personal research, other documents (such as personal card indexes) are also taken into account. Please understand that due to data protection and on the basis of the Hessian Archive Act, personal documents relating to third parties are generally subject to a retention period of ten years from the date of death or 100 years from birth. If necessary, the municipal archive will advise you on the retention periods as well as on exceptions and possible shortening options.

Digitized civil status documents

The years of the death registers are only freely accessible after 60 years have passed - example: in 2022, deaths up to 1961 will be accessible. The certificates can be viewed and saved online free of charge. Further information can be found at the Hesse Civil Status Archive via the link at the bottom of the page.

Wiesbaden address books

Another important source for family researchers are the address books for Wiesbaden, some of which also contain later incorporated towns and neighboring communities such as Bad Schwalbach, Bleidenstadt, Hahn/Taunus, Niederwalluf, Neuhof/Taunus, Schlangenbad and Wehen/Taunus. The Wiesbaden City Archive has a complete collection of address books, which can be viewed in the reading room.

The Wiesbaden University and State Library has digitized the Wiesbaden address books for the period 1889 to 1950. These can be viewed and saved free of charge on the following pages - Address Book of the Residential City of Wiesbaden and Surroundings 1889-1918, Address Book of the City of Wiesbaden and Surroundings 1920-1937 and Wiesbaden Address Book 1938-1950. You will find the links at the bottom of the page.
