Forest road

Waldstraße is a residential and commercial area belonging to Biebrich in the southwest of Wiesbaden. Today, the district is roughly bordered by the thoroughfares Saarstrasse and Schiersteiner Strasse, Konrad-Adenauer-Ring, Holsteinstrasse and Erich-Ollenhauerstrasse. Waldstraße has always been an important transport link from Mainz to the forest areas of the Taunus. This is also the reason for its name. People settled here as early as the Stone Age, but also in Roman times and under the Franks. In the Middle Ages, the loam and loess soil was used as farmland for centuries, which was cultivated in three-field farming.

In the middle of the 19th century, market gardens settled here. Brickworks and kilns were built in 1871. To the right and left of Waldstrasse, further small housing estates "in the countryside" developed with the support of the Spar- und Bauverein, with multi-family and single-family houses as apartments for workers, railroad employees, employees of the Kalle and Albert industrial companies and owners of small retail stores. However, the area also suffered losses in the 20th century. The domed building of the Rettenmayer company, which was once visible from afar, has disappeared, the independent post office has fallen victim to rationalization and the old Waldstraße railroad station has been closed. The most significant historical loss is the demolition of the "Grimberghe" castle.

Today, the sports hall on Konrad-Adenauer-Ring is located here. In the former park of Villa Grimberghe stands the Catholic St. Kilian's Church, built in 1937, and a parish hall of the Croatian parish, which was added in 2003. The Protestant St. Mark's Church was consecrated in 1954. Until then, the Protestant congregation, which had existed since 1870, had belonged to the main church in Biebrich and held its services first in the old Schmelze and from 1901/02 in the Oranierschule (now Diesterwegschule). In 1914, it was given a Protestant parish hall and a kindergarten.
