The Römertor was built in 1903 by city architect Felix Genzmer over a breakthrough in the Heidenmauer, which had become necessary when Coulinstraße was built. The historicizing viaduct consists of a main and side gate, towers and battlements. Genzmer realized it according to the Roman model with quarry stone masonry and a wooden construction. The covered walkway completes the impression of a fortress in the style of the Saalburg, which was reconstructed in 1898. This is followed at right angles by a flight of steps, which provide a short route to Langgasse. In 1979, a staircase was added to the structure on the valley side, making it possible for pedestrians to cross Coulinstraße via the Römertor.

The Römertor was completely renovated between 2010 and 2014. For reasons of monument protection, the entrance to the city side was removed again. Since then, the Römertor has fulfilled the purpose of a viewing platform originally intended by its architect Felix Genzmer.
