Bulky waste fire spreads to residential building
Early Wednesday morning, the Wiesbaden fire department received a report of a fire involving bulky waste in a backyard in Wiesbadener Straße in the Dotzheim district. Attentive neighbors noticed the fire at around 6:15 a.m. and immediately alerted the fire department. On the way, the firefighters could already see a column of black smoke above the scene.
When the first emergency services arrived, the fire had already spread to the roof and was threatening to spread to the adjoining apartments. The roof beams and cladding parts were already burning in the area of the roof overhang. A breathing apparatus unit immediately deployed a jet pipe to prevent the fire from spreading further.
Another team wearing breathing apparatus entered the building to check the apartments. All the residents had already left. Broken window panes and window seals had caused fire smoke to enter the apartments, which is why they were ventilated with a high-performance fan. The neighboring buildings were also checked, as a window was open in the adjacent building and clear traces of fire were already visible on the shutters and the porch roof in the house behind the building on fire.
The fire was extinguished after just under half an hour. The ventilation and control measures continued for some time. During the operation, Wiesbadener Straße was fully closed to traffic in the area of the scene. The damage to property is estimated at around €50,000. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the police.
Almost 30 firefighters from Fire Station 1 and the Wiesbaden-Dotzheim volunteer fire department, an ambulance, a police patrol car and ESWE-Verkehr traffic control were deployed.
