Environmental tip April: Down to the last crumb - avoiding food waste
Can you imagine how much food per person in Germany ends up in the bin every year? Ten, 30 or even 50 kilograms? In fact, it's almost 80 kilograms - which corresponds to around a third of the food consumption per capita.
According to studies by the Wiesbaden waste disposal company, almost 50% of this could be avoided, especially baked goods, fruit and vegetables.
It is high time to change something! Because wasting food not only costs money, it also has a negative impact on the environment.
The good news is that food waste can be significantly reduced with simple measures - and you can even save money in the process.
10 tips for a sustainable approach to food:
- Plan your shopping: What food is still available and should be used up soon? What will be needed in the next few days? More frequent, smaller purchases help to avoid waste.
- Shop according to need: Special offers and large packs often tempt you to buy more than you actually need.
- Store food correctly: Animal products, leftovers and many vegetables and some types of fruit belong in the fridge.
- Interpret the best-before date correctly: It indicates until when taste, color or nutritional values are preserved - food is usually still edible after this date.
- Use preservation methods: Freezing, vacuuming, boiling down and fermenting help to preserve food for longer.
- Get creative: Cookbooks and apps offer recipes to turn leftovers into tasty dishes.
- Pass on food you have bought too much of: Give away surplus food to friends, neighbors or initiatives such as "food sharing".
- Buy food with a short best-before date: If you use up food in the next few days, you can consciously choose products with a shorter best-before date.
- Save food with "Too Good To Go": The app offers leftover food from restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets at reduced prices.
- Creative reuse: Citrus peel and coffee grounds are suitable for household, garden or cosmetic use.
With these tips, you can effectively reduce food waste - good for your wallet and the environment!
