Self-help groups
Self-help groups offer people the opportunity to communicate with those affected and their relatives about illness and its consequences. By exchanging ideas, ways can be shown and sometimes seemingly hopeless situations can be solved together.
The community provides support and leads out of the feeling of powerlessness and isolation. In the case of chronic illnesses and disabilities, this togetherness helps, as the aim here is to cope with stressful conditions and limitations. Everyone's concerns are taken seriously, and the understanding and support provide security and thus a greater sense of well-being. By highlighting and recognizing personal strengths, illnesses, disabilities, psychological and social problems can be better managed.
People with illnesses and their relatives are experts in their own cause; they know where problems exist and where help can be provided or improved. This high level of patient competence and knowledge makes them important partners in our healthcare system. They are a necessary and useful addition to medical treatment.
Thanks to the self-help groups, a sense of solidarity can be created between those affected, their relatives and those not affected. Self-help offers a lot: support, information, cohesion, years of friendship, trusting exchanges and much more.
