Smart City Unit

Portrait of a man - Dr. Thomas Ortseifen
Head of Division Dr. Thomas Ortseifen

As part of the first Smart City department in Germany, we want to advance our state capital Wiesbaden not only on a technological level, but also on a social, ecological and innovative level.

Smart cities are intelligently networked cities that pursue the goal of making future coexistence sustainable and efficient through the use of modern technologies, but above all through networking within the city. They should offer citizens high added value, make daily life easier in a variety of ways and, as a result, increase satisfaction and quality of life.

The department is working specifically on the further expansion and development of a sustainable Smart City Wiesbaden. The primary goal is to make Wiesbaden even more liveable and sustainable with the help of intelligent infrastructures and digital solutions. This includes, in particular, the areas of people, health, transport & mobility, energy, buildings, education & culture, urban areas and the economy and is therefore aimed at a wide range of projects and topics such as digital participation or a digital twin of the city.

The focal points of the Smart City department are

  • Strategic orientation
  • Program management
  • Citizen participation (citizen science)
  • Data platform/open data
  • Technology management (IoT/sensor technology)
