Klarenthal
In the summer of 1960, the city council decided to build three large housing estates in Biebricher Parkfeld, Dotzheimer Schelmengraben and Klarenthal, where the conditions for acquiring the necessary land were particularly favorable, as most of the land belonged to the Nassau Central Study Fund. The Nassauische Heimstätte and the city itself via its non-profit housing associations were to be the project sponsors.
On November 11, 1960, the urban planner Ernst May was commissioned to draw up a development plan for a housing estate with approx. 4,000 residential units for around 14,000 inhabitants (70 residential units per hectare). The topographical conditions led to the terracing of the site. The residential buildings were to be erected in very elongated groups parallel to the elevation layers, resulting in a certain staggering of the development. In addition, high-rise point buildings and around 2 × 200 detached houses were planned. The total cost was estimated at DM 62 million, of which DM 42 million was borne by the city of Wiesbaden. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 11.09.1964 in the presence of the Hessian Minister of the Interior, Heinrich Schneider, by Lord Mayor Georg Buch.
For the first time, the houses were built using prefabricated construction methods, so that the construction time for one residential unit could be reduced from 18 months to four. After less than one and a half years, the first houses were completed. The first tenants were able to move in on 26.02.1966. The expansion was completed in 1971. This was followed by the construction of schools (Geschwister-Scholl-Schule, Oberstufengymnasium West and, since 1989, Carl-von-Ossietzky-Schule Gymnasien) and churches. The recognition as an independent district with its own local council in September 1970 contributed to the formation of a sense of belonging.
