Wiesbaden Golf Club

In 1893, the oldest German golf club was founded in Wiesbaden by local English and Scottish gentlemen. Soon, German members were also allowed to try their hand at the green sport on the provisional golf courses on the Dotzheim parade ground and later on the grounds of the Erbenheim racecourse. A separate golf course was built on the so-called Gehrn meadows at the Chausseehaus. In addition to the city, the three largest hotels in Wiesbaden contributed to the construction of the clubhouse.

In the 1930s, the sparkling wine producer Karl Henkell was also president of the Wiesbaden Golf Club and the German Golf Association, which is still based in Wiesbaden today. After the Second World War, Baron Hanns von Schertel and Otto Henkell took over the management of the club. They were succeeded in 1958 by Walther H. Buckup, who was replaced by Adalbert Eras in 1972. His successor Dietrich von Knoop served on the Board of Directors for over 30 years and was appointed Honorary President in 2007.

To mark its 100th anniversary, the Wiesbaden Golf Club was awarded the badge of honor by the Hessian Minister President in 1993. Great sporting successes were achieved in the 1960s by the wife of the former president, Elisabeth Buckup, and the national players Walter Brühne and Dietrich von Knoop. In 1963, the club won the German Club Cup.
