Rettberg, Carl Ludwig Friedrich von

Colonel

born: 08.10.1788 in Buxtehude near Stade

died: 05.11.1844 in Wiesbaden

Rettberg began his Nassau officer's career in 1808 as a cadet in the cavalry and was promoted to lieutenant after less than half a year and to cavalry captain in 1813. After the disbandment of the Reitende Jäger, Rettberg joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment as a captain in 1814, only to be appointed to the general staff and at the same time as the duke's wing adjutant. By the time of his death, he had reached the rank of colonel. In 1809-13 Rettberg took part in the campaign in Spain and in 1815 in the Battle of Waterloo.

The island of Rettbergsaue in front of Biebrich on the Rhine is named after him, supposedly in recognition of his bravery in the war on the Iberian Peninsula. Rettberg found his final resting place in the Old Cemetery.
