After training as a locksmith, Lied initially worked in Berlin and became involved in the Young Tradesmen's Association. He served in the navy during the First World War, returned to Wiesbaden after the war and set up his own vehicle repair workshop in Adlerstraße in 1926. In 1927, he passed his master craftsman's examination and in 1928 became chairman of the automotive trade section of the locksmiths' guild. In 1934, he co-founded his own motor vehicle guild and subsequently held the office of head master of the guild until 1953. In 1954, he was elected state guild master.
Lied also belonged to the FDP and was a member of the Hessian state parliament from 1950-54. He was particularly committed to the interests of the skilled trades and small and medium-sized businesses. The improvement of apprenticeship training was an important concern for him. Lied worked as an expert at the Wiesbaden Chamber of Crafts and in various trade associations.
