Radio in Wiesbaden

In 1926, around 1,000 radio listeners were registered in Wiesbaden. On 01.04.1924, the "Frankfurt station", Südwestdeutsche Rundfunkdienst AG (SÜWRAG), began broadcasting a regular program that included musical performances, lectures and news as well as literary readings, opera broadcasts and programs especially for women and children. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, the state broadcasters lost their independence and were brought into line.

After the Second World War, the Allies confiscated all German stations and banned all broadcasting. In Hesse, the American military government placed all broadcasting facilities under its control. As a "station of the American Military Government", "Radio Frankfurt" (later Hessischer Rundfunk, hr) began regular program operations on 01.06.1945. Around two years later, on June 30, 1947, the broadcasting station of the American air force in the Wiesbaden Kurhaus was handed over to the American military government and Radio Frankfurt was incorporated.

The number of radio listeners in Wiesbaden rose rapidly in the post-war years. In 1949, there were already 51,000 listeners compared to 45,600 the year before.

After several months of rebuilding work, the Wiesbaden broadcasting station, which was initially housed provisionally in a niche in the gallery of the large Kurhaus hall, made its first appearance on Radio Frankfurt's program "Aus der Landeshauptstadt" on 14 July 1948. When the studio space was needed for the reconstruction of the large Kurhaussaal, a new, larger studio was set up in the Kurhaus wing opposite. At the same time, the technical equipment was renewed - an OB van was no longer necessary for the program from Wiesbaden.

The first program from the expanded studio was broadcast on 11.06.1952. In 1965, the hr studio in Wiesbaden received additional technical equipment to enable it to broadcast current affairs reports. Over time, however, the premises in the Kurhaus proved to be too small for fast and extensive reporting, and the Wiesbaden studio moved to the Kavalierhaus on Schlossplatz; on June 9, 1975, the new radio and television studios in the Hessian State Parliament building were put into operation. Since 1988, the studio and editorial offices have been located in the Wilhelmsbau.

More recently, new radio stations have been added. The private radio station Hit Radio FFH began broadcasting in Hesse in November 1989, and a regional studio was set up in Wiesbaden in 1995. In 1996, the municipal radio station Rheinwelle also began broadcasting.
