Hauberrisser, Georg von (ennobled 1901)

architect

born: 19.03.1841 in Graz

died: 17.05.1922 in Munich

The eponymous son of Graz architect Georg Hauberrisser first studied architecture in his home town, from 1862 in Munich under Gottfried Neureuther and Georg Friedrich Ziebland, then in Berlin and finally under Friedrich von Schmidt in Vienna, the main representative of the Gothic reception at the time.

In 1865, Hauberrisser submitted a competition design in Gothic style for the new town hall building in Munich, with which the 25-year-old prevailed without practice against a design in Renaissance style by the Munich building council Arnold Zenetti. The building, which was constructed under his direction in 1867-74, fitted in well with its surroundings. Hauberrisser settled in Munich in 1866. In 1876, he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

In 1882, the Wiesbaden city council announced a competition for a prestigious new town hall between the city palace and the market church. Hauberrisser took part, did not receive a prize, but was nevertheless commissioned to build it. This time, he was guided by Renaissance forms, as the Gothic style was reserved for sacred buildings in Wiesbaden. The building was completed in 1887 and accentuated the surroundings in a new way. As with all his buildings, he also paid attention to the details of the interior and façade design. This was particularly evident in the main façade facing Schlossplatz, which was destroyed in 1945, with its gables, stair towers and decorative sculptures.

In Munich, Hauberrisser was commissioned twice more to extend the New Town Hall, until it finally took up an entire block in 1909 and completely changed the character of Marienplatz. Stylistically, the Gothic ornamentation was already outdated by the time it was emphasized by the tower. Hauberrisser was ridiculed as a "German imperial Gothic". In professional circles, however, he was regarded as a specialist in town hall construction. He was knighted and ennobled in 1901.
