HARLEKIN ART
In 1977, art collectors Ute and Michael Berger began organizing exhibitions and an edition under the name HARLEKIN ART in the former Catholic church in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim, which they had recently acquired. It was to be an edition of objects that on the one hand came from progressive artists and was designed exclusively for this task, and on the other hand was to be inexpensive enough to appeal to a wider public. Advisors in the background were Norbert (Kuba) Kubatzki and later Erich Gantzert-Castrillo, conservator at the Museum Wiesbaden, who was able to publish his extensive "Archive for Techniques and Working Materials of Contemporary Artists" in HARLEKIN ART together with the museum in 1979. Over the years, there have been exhibitions and editions of works by Johannes Brus, Michael Buthe, Jochen Gerz, Herbert Hamák, Joe Jones, Jürgen Klauke, Ulay/Abramovic, Ben Vautier, Hannah Villinger and Wolf Vostell, among others.
In 1982, the church was one of the venues for the major FLUXUS exhibition in Wiesbaden, followed by the ART HATS exhibition in 1983. In 1984 and 1985, parts of the Ute and Michael Berger collection were exhibited at the Museum Wiesbaden, "Multiples and Objects" and "Between Drawing and Video". When the FLUXEUM was established in the church in 1986, events, activities and exhibitions moved to the premises at Wandersmannstraße 39, a farm ensemble with a large courtyard. HARLEKIN Geschenke was based here and the alternative May Festival took place here. Exhibition and edition activities ended in 1990.
