Genealogical Society for Nassau and Frankfurt e.V.
Founded on November 29, 1947, the Familienkundliche Gesellschaft für Nassau und Frankfurt e. V. is in the tradition of the societies "Nassauische familiengeschichtliche Vereinigung Wiesbaden" with its publication organ "Der Uhrturm" and "Genealogische Gesellschaft in Frankfurt am Main". The aim was to redefine the "Sippenforschung" (clan research) cultivated during the Nazi era after 1945 and to incorporate it into the genealogical research of the young state of Hesse. The driving force of this period was the genealogist Dr. Heinz F. Friederichs. With the Gausippenamt Hessen-Nassau (from spring 1943), which he headed, he believed he had found the genealogical field of work he had hoped for in the final phase of the war. After the end of Nazi rule, in 1947 he endeavored to found a "State Office for Genealogy in Hesse" based on the model of the civil status archives in Brühl and Detmold. However, the archives and the responsible ministries showed no interest in this and instead he founded the "Central Office for Personal and Family History" in Frankfurt-Höchst as well as the journal "Hessische Familienkunde" (HFK), which he edited until 1990. The Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Familienkundlichen Gesellschaften in Hessen is still behind this today.
The Familienkundliche Gesellschaft für Nassau und Frankfurt e.V. initially maintained working groups not only in Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, but also in Wetzlar and Frankfurt-Höchst. In 1978, the society took up permanent residence in the Hessian Main State Archives in Wiesbaden, where the Wiesbaden working group had its home anyway. The driving force was Hellmuth Gensicke, who was chairman from 1978-87. Today, the society's collections are accessible to researchers in the Hessian Main State Archives. The society promotes interest in family history and genealogical research with lectures in the winter months, reading courses in German script and articles in the journal "Hessische Familienkunde", but above all through the connections between members. Today it has around 220 members.
