Dormann owned a large bricklaying business and was involved in the construction of numerous ecclesiastical and public buildings. These included the English Church(Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury), the Marktkirche, Bergkirche and Maria Hilf Kirche, the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Heilanstalt, the Vorschussverein building, the Wiesbaden Casino-Gesellschaft building and the St. Josefs-Hospital.
For decades, Dormann was a member of the Catholic church council and played a major role in the life of Catholic associations in Wiesbaden. He was also active in the city council and had great influence in commercial matters as a city councillor.
