Domarus, Max

Historian, archivist

Born: 12.06.1866 in Schlochau (today Czluchów, Poland)

died: 04.03.1946 in Wiesbaden

Domarus obtained his doctorate in 1891 after studying history under Theodor Lindner (1843-1919) in Halle with a thesis on the relations between the German kings from Rudolf of Habsburg to Louis the Bavarian and Denmark. In 1893, he received a scholarship from the Görres Society, which enabled him to spend four years researching in Italy. He began his career as an archivist at the Hanover State Archives in 1897 and was transferred to the Wiesbaden State Archives in 1900, where he worked as archive director from 1921-31.

Domarus made a name for himself with numerous publications on local and regional history. He wrote over 50 works on the history of Nassau, including the history and development of St. Georgenstift in Limburg an der Lahn. For a monograph on the history of the municipality of Dernbach near Montabaur, the municipality awarded him honorary citizenship.

After he retired, Domarus carried out classification work in various parish archives in the diocese of Limburg. In Wiesbaden, he was involved in numerous charitable institutions and associations. He was head of the Academic Aid Association for war-disabled people, second chairman of the reading club, chairman of the local chapter of the Association of Catholic Academics and a member of the church council of St. Boniface.
