Dörr, Rudolf

Architect, town planner

Born: 08.12.1902 in Wiesbaden

died: 06.05.1989 in Wiesbaden

Dörr studied at the TH Darmstadt from 1921, but soon transferred to the TH Stuttgart, the so-called Stuttgart School with its professors Paul Bonatz, Paul Schmitthenner and Heinz Wetzel. In Stuttgart, Dörr received significant impulses with regard to modern urban planning, which was to create an artistic solution derived from functionality based on the location and the building task.

Dörr's first major project coincided with his state examination to become a government architect in 1930. Based on plans drawn up together with his father Heinrich Dörr, apartment buildings were built in rows on both sides of Kauber and the right-hand side of Oestricher Straße, west of Loreleirings, by 1932.

Dörr's main work is the planning for the reconstruction of the Kurviertel and Quellenviertel distr icts, which were destroyed in 1945, and their realization. His development proposal was the basis for the overall planning and provided for the uniform design of the new Webergasse (1953/54), for example. The buildings on this street have been listed as an ensemble since the late 1980s.

His credo of "preserving and progressing" was reflected a little later in a residential and commercial complex: The "Vier Jahreszeiten" apartment building on Wilhelmstrasse (1956-58) is reminiscent of its predecessor, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, due to its hotel character; a parallel building (1962-64) erected on the west side of Kaiser-Friedrich-Platz creates a spatial connection to the newly created inner city district.

"References are everything" was another of Dörr's professions, and so, for example, the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche in Kohlheck, built in 1968/69, reflects the rural character of the neighboring new settlement through simple forms and building materials such as quarry stone, brick, slate and wood.

Dörr was honored with the bronze citizen's medal in 1978 for his voluntary work on the architectural advisory board of the city of Wiesbaden, which was formed in 1947.
