Aukamm Clinic for Surgical Rheumatology and Orthopaedics
On 01.10.1907, the orthopaedist and cripple doctor Dr. Paul Guradze opened a private surgical and orthopaedic clinic in a villa at Mainzer Straße 3 in Wiesbaden, which had central heating with hot water, electric light, an electric passenger and dumbwaiter elevator, a telephone system, an operating room with associated preparation room as well as a plaster and dressing room, an X-ray system, a department for physical healing methods and therapeutic gymnastics and an orthopaedic workshop.
From 1919 until his death in 1924, Guradze was also head physician at the newly opened orthopaedic clinic in Wiesbaden, the Alfred-Erich-Heim. In 1924, Dr. Joseph Borggreve took over the management of both clinics. He developed surgical methods that are still used today, e.g. the "knee joint replacement by rotating the ankle by 180° in the longitudinal axis of the leg". In 1950, Dr. Rudolf Frère (1912-1996) acquired the former private clinic, which had been run as a sanatorium and retirement home by his widow Antonie Guradze since 1938.
In August 1951, the clinic was reopened with a focus on surgery, trauma surgery and reconstructive surgery. It gained a special reputation in the surgical treatment and rehabilitation of war invalids. At the beginning of the 1970s, a swap took place as part of urban redevelopment. A new clinic building was erected on the south-facing slope of the Aukamm area for the site in Mainzer Straße. On October 5, 1973, the clinic for surgery and trauma surgery was opened with 49 beds and was given its current name "Aukamm-Klinik".
Under the leadership of Prof. Klaus Miehlke, a modern rheumatism center was to be established in Wiesbaden, with the Aukamm Clinic intended for the surgical treatment of rheumatic diseases. From 1977, Dr. Günter Salzmann and Dr. Dieter Sarfert, physicians for orthopaedics and rheumatology, managed the Aukamm-Klinik.
After the clinic was taken over by a private company, the Aukamm-Klinik became a specialist hospital for orthopaedics and operative rheumatology, an affiliated hospital with an integrated group practice. A cooperation agreement was concluded with the municipal rheumatology clinic and what is now the Klaus Miehlke Clinic in Wiesbaden. The latter was built in 1978 next to the Aukamm Clinic and is physically connected to it, but is under separate commercial and medical management. The joint practice cooperates with DKD within the framework of regular orthopaedic consultations.
On January 1, 2004, Rhön-Klinikum AG took over the shares of the Aukamm-Klinik. The clinic was taken over from the Rhön Group by Helios on 01.03.2014.
