Bach Choir
The Bach Choir of the Lutherkirche has been part of Wiesbaden's musical life since 1978. In addition to performances as part of church services, the choir organizes numerous concerts with compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach as well as works from other eras. In 2003, the Bach Choir was awarded the Wiesbaden Culture Prize.
The Bach Choir was founded in 1978 as a mixed church choir by Klaus Uwe Ludwig, who was newly appointed church musician at the Lutherkirche at the time. In addition to performing motets and cantatas in church services, the choir also performs numerous concerts. In addition to the great works of Johann Sebastian Bach, the choir performs compositions from different eras, often elaborate oratorios. The program often includes lesser-known works, some of which have been recorded on CD. Concert tours have taken the choir to Gdansk, Paris, the USA and repeatedly to England. There is a close partnership with the "Royal Tunbridge Wells Choral Society" in Wiesbaden's twin town Tunbridge Wells (Great Britain) with joint concerts in both towns.
Several special circles have emerged from the choir, e.g. for a cappella music and for the promotion of young talent. Singing with children and young people is a high priority and is currently divided into seven groups, depending on age and progress. There are currently around 130 children.
The Bach Orchestra was founded to accompany the singers and later to perform symphonic music. The Johann Walter Circle was founded to perform Renaissance music, and recorder and brass ensembles were added. The Bach Choir was awarded the Cultural Prize of the State Capital of Wiesbaden in 2003 and currently consists of around 100 singers from Wiesbaden and the Rheingau region. It regularly takes part in the Wiesbaden Bach Weeks. Since November 2008, it has been under the direction of Luther Church cantor Jörg Endebrock.
