Cycling for bird protection
To mark the start of the cycling season, the city is launching a special campaign to protect birdlife.
Mayor and Head of the Environment Department Christiane Hinninger explains: "Anyone who cycles around the city can now donate the kilometers they have cycled for bird protection. For every 120 kilometers cycled, there is a nesting box in the environmental store - while stocks last. In this way, cyclists are not only doing something for their fitness and climate protection, but also creating new breeding grounds for birds."
The nesting boxes worth 12 euros can be exchanged for kilometers collected - only one box per person. To take part, the DB Rad+ app must be installed and activated on a smartphone. The city of Wiesbaden offers it free of charge in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn. The app can be used to record the kilometers ridden and redeem them for discounts at numerous local and online partners in addition to the Umweltladen.
The installation of nesting boxes is important as there is often a lack of natural cavities in cities - old and rotten trees are increasingly being removed. Nesting boxes not only provide birds with breeding sites, but also shelter on cold nights. Around a third of native bird species are already considered endangered.
The DB Rad + app for Android and Apple devices can be downloaded free of charge from: https://radplus.bahnhof.de/ (opens in a new tab)
