Viticulture on the Neroberg / Chateau Nero

The vineyard on the Neroberg is one of the few inner-city vineyards in Germany. Thanks to the unique terroir, Rieslings with a fine interplay of fruit aromas and elegant fruit acidity are produced here, some of which also show floral and flowery notes.

The vineyard high up on Wiesbaden's local mountain, which was managed by the city of Wiesbaden until 2005, is now under the care of the Hessische Staatsweingüter and is looked after by the wine-growing experts at Domäne Rauenthal. The vineyard is now considered a cultural monument and is a listed building.

Site name, soil structure and wine characters

When it was first cleared for viticulture in 1525/26, it was called Ersberg, later also Mersberg, whereby the "m" was probably added to the name "an Ersberg". In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was called Nersberg. In a kind of romantic return to Wiesbaden's Roman past, the local mountain was renamed Neroberg in the last century.

The medium and deep, stony-gritty soils consist of sericite gneiss with an admixture of loess loam. The wines are fruity, spicy and have a piquant acidity. They are closed in their youth. Depending on the annual weather conditions, the wines can be very different.

Summer tip: Château Nero

On beer benches and seating cubes in the Chateau Nero, you can look down over the vines to the city and enjoy the wine from the Eberbach monastery.
