Artistic design concept for the Michelsberg memorial site
The state capital of Wiesbaden commemorates its Jewish citizens who were murdered by the National Socialists between 1935 and 1945 with the "Memorial by Name" on Michelsberg.
The artistic design concept for this memorial creates a place within the city that offers the opportunity to come to terms with the Holocaust. The memorial site invites visitors to find a personal and collective form of remembrance. The inner space of the memorial is functionally divided into the walk-in memorial space in the incised slope and the adjoining area with Coulinstrasse running through it.
A ribbon with the names of the victims forms the central element of the memorial. Other main elements are the wall panels that show the overall space of the memorial and the marking of the ground plan and base of the synagogue destroyed in 1938.
On the inside of the wall panels is a 1.20 meter high band bearing the names of the 1,546 Jewish victims known to date. The name of each victim is inscribed on a separate natural stone slab. Blank stones have been added so that further names, which will only be researched later, can be integrated. These blank stones also highlight the incompleteness of the lists of victims. The tape is recessed into the wall. "Stones of remembrance" can be placed on the resulting edge. At nightfall, the ribbon of names is illuminated.
Walls seven meters high were erected on the outer lines of the base of the former synagogue. Over a total length of 62 meters, they mark the "empty space" and the location of the destroyed synagogue.
On the floor of the memorial room and on the roadway, the base of the former synagogue has been recreated. A stone surface that contrasts with the surrounding paving was used for this purpose. The upper edge of the base of the former synagogue is reproduced on the wall panels by a protruding layer of natural stone. This marking conveys the size of the former synagogue and at the same time gives rhythm to the wall surfaces.
The square on Michelsberg is opposite the memorial and is part of the pedestrian zone that begins here. An information board here provides information about the memorial and the former synagogue. Furthermore, memorial sheets from the "Active Museum" can be viewed, which provide information about the fate of individual Jewish victims of Wiesbaden.
