Experimental spaces for sustainable urban development

CarlO experimental space - sustainable living in Klarenthal

A new district is being built in Klarenthal on the site of the former Carl von Ossietzky School. Around 300 apartments are planned, as car-free as possible, with a focus on sustainable urban planning.

The picture shows a building with modern, functional architecture. The façade is predominantly gray with yellow window frames. In the foreground is a paved area with a low, planted wall on which "Experimen Carlo" is written in green letters. An older street lamp with two lights casts a long shadow on the ground. The area looks somewhat deserted, with vegetation around the edges. The sky with a few clouds can be seen in the background.
Forecourt of the former school

"South of Ernst-von-Harnack-Straße" in Klarenthal is the site of the former Carl vonOssietzky School in the middle of the Ernst May housing estate.

Today, the site is characterized by the unusual, honeycomb-shaped former school building and the extensive green and play areas with some old trees.

In future, a lively quarter with different, new types of housing is to be created here, which will blend in well with the surrounding residential development. Under the motto ".... you can manage without a car!", the district is to be as car-free as possible with the aim of giving the public paths and traffic areas back to the people.

A total of around 300 new apartments are to be built. This is in line with the cooperation agreement, which stipulates a minimum density of 80 residential units per hectare for new residential areas.

Half of the property will be allocated by the state capital of Wiesbaden in a concept procedure according to quality criteria, while the other half will be used by the non-profit municipal housing association GWW to build affordable/subsidized housing. The existing building is to be included in the planning (keyword "gray energy").
