Experimental spaces for sustainable urban development

In order to meet the challenges of climate change and social cohesion in the long term, the state capital of Wiesbaden (LHW) has drawn up rules for more sustainability in urban development. Since 2021, LHW has been implementing these rules in five experimental spaces.

What does sustainable urban development mean for LHW?

The most important guidelines for sustainable urban redevelopment geared towards the common good are described in the New Leipzig Charter (2020) and its action dimensions of the just, green and productive city. Like many European cities, LHW is also committed to the New Leipzig Charter as a guiding principle for sustainable urban development.

Further information on the New Leipzig Charter can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building.

In the spirit of a "city of short distances", the aim in Wiesbaden is to create compact, socially and economically mixed urban spaces with well-developed infrastructures and a healthy urban climate. These offer people the opportunity for identification and social participation.

What are the rules of sustainable urban development in the LHW?

In 2019, the Urban Planning Department and the Environmental Agency jointly developed five key topics for the sustainable conversion of the area using the example of a model district in Mainz-Kastel, the Kastel Housing Area:

  • Vibrant city ... Here you live in a colorful and urban diversity!
  • Climate-optimized urban green ... Nature takes its place here!
  • Sensitive water management ... Not a drop of water is lost here!
  • Renewable & gray energy ... Here you supply yourself with sustainable energy!
  • New mobility ... Here you can get by without a car!

Behind these five topic areas are so-called "rules of the game" and quality standards for resource-conserving, sustainable urban and neighborhood development. LHW thus has a "toolbox" that is taken into account in urban development planning right from the start.

The explanatory video clearly illustrates the rules of the game in the five subject areas for the Kastel Housing Area model district.

What does the LHW understand by "experimental spaces" for sustainable urban development?

Sustainable urban development starts in the neighborhood! Suitable measures for future-proof and sustainable urban development in Wiesbaden can be developed at the sub-area level of the "neighborhood" in particular. To this end, the LHW has selected five experimental areas in which the rules of sustainable urban development can be tested and initial practical experience gained.

5 x experimentation

LHW is implementing the rules of sustainable urban development in five project areas with different focuses:

  1. CarlO, sustainable living in Klarenthal - "Südlich der Ernst-von-Harnack-Straße" in Klarenthal
  2. Completing the cityscape and securing open spaces - "Auf dem Hahnenkamm" in Dotzheim
  3. Using existing housing creatively and developing it efficiently - "Im Sampel" in Mainz-Kostheim
  4. The inclusive 15-minute district - "Bahnhofs.Quartier" in Biebrich
  5. Designing Gründerzeit districts to be climate-friendly and multifunctional - Green-Grey-Blue, street living space

All five project areas are "inner development" districts (i.e. within the existing housing stock). The locations of the project areas can be found on the overview map.
